What to Wear for Family Photos in Virginia Beach

Let’s take the pressure off right away — you don’t need to buy a brand-new wardrobe for your session. Most families already have everything they need; it’s just about putting pieces together in a way that feels cohesive. The goal isn’t to look overly styled or trendy, but to look comfortable, confident, and like yourselves on a really good day. Family photos in Virginia Beach tend to lean into a relaxed, coastal feel, and your clothing can help support that without trying too hard.

Coordinating Is Better Than Matching

Matching outfits had their moment, but now we aim for connection without uniformity. Choosing a simple color palette and spreading it across everyone’s outfits helps the group feel visually tied together while still letting personalities show through. Mixing textures — like linen, knits, or flowy fabrics — adds interest without needing bold patterns. When everyone looks slightly different but still harmonious, photos feel much more natural and less staged. It also keeps things from looking dated when you pull these images out years from now.

An easy formula to follow:

  • Start with one outfit you love

  • Pull a few colors from that outfit for everyone else

  • Add light layers or texture

  • Keep it comfortable and true to your style

Pick Colors That Play Nicely With the Scenery

Our local landscapes already give us a beautiful backdrop — soft sand, water, grasses, and trees — so colors that echo those tones work naturally. Lighter neutrals, soft blues, sage greens, and warm tans tend to photograph really well because they don’t compete with the environment. These shades also reflect the evening light in a flattering way, which helps skin tones look warm and natural instead of overly contrasty. When outfits blend with the setting instead of fighting it, the whole image feels calmer and more timeless.

Make Sure You Can Actually Move

We’re not standing in one place the whole time — we’ll walk, sit, pick kids up, and maybe end up with sandy toes. Wearing something you can move in makes a huge difference in how relaxed you feel during all of that. If you’re constantly adjusting straps, smoothing wrinkles, or worrying about getting dirty, it shows up in photos. Comfortable clothing lets you focus on your family instead of your outfit. And when you feel at ease, the images follow suit.

Be Mindful of Wind (Because There Will Be Wind)

If we’re anywhere near the water in Virginia Beach, it’s almost always a little breezy. Flowy outfits are lovely, but very loose sleeves, extra-frilly details, or ultra-light fabrics around the arms and neckline can end up blowing everywhere and needing constant adjusting. Pieces that have a bit of structure at the shoulders or chest tend to stay in place while still feeling soft and comfortable.

A Quick Note About Hair at the Beach

Beach air and perfectly styled hair rarely agree, and that’s completely okay. A little movement from the breeze actually adds to the relaxed, coastal feel of these sessions. Simple styles like loose waves, braids, or anything that still looks good if it shifts a bit work best.

A Few Things to Skip

There are just a few things that tend to distract more than they help. Super bright neon colors can reflect strange tones onto skin, and large logos pull attention away from faces. Very stiff fabrics don’t move well, which can make photos feel more rigid than they need to. Shoes that are hard to walk in usually end up coming off anyway, so it’s better to plan for that from the start. Keeping things simple almost always leads to the most natural-looking result.

If you’re still not sure what works best, don’t stress — I’m always happy to help you plan outfits once your session is booked.
